Course description

The STCW Basic Training Refresher (BT-R) aims to refresh the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to perform the role as seafarer effectively. Delegates will receive appropriate STCW ’78 as amended approved basic training in: personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first-aid, personal safety and social responsibilities. The refresher training has to be repeated every 5 years.

Target group

This training course is designed for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety or pollution prevention duties in the operation of the ship.

Prerequisites and validity

For admission to the course a delegate must:

  • Have a valid STCW Basic Training (BT) or STCW Basic Training Refresher (BT-R) certificate
  • Be in the possession of a valid medical examination for seafarers, including the use of Breathing Apparatus (BA).

OR

  • the seafarer must be in the possession of a valid Certificate of Competence (CoC) in combination with a valid seaman’s book as a prove of 1 year sea time over the last 5 years.

The certificate is valid for 5 years.
